barteringBy Reniqua Allen

Bartering, the world’s oldest business practice is making a comeback.

The concept of bartering—trading goods or services without money—existed long before the advent of cash currency. Today’s small business bartering however is not as simple as walking into a market and trading a chicken for a wool scarf.

Third party firms, companies that establish bartering networks between businesses, now dominate the industry—helping exchange everything from garden services, to breast implants, to college tuition and all without cash.

The road from Main Street to Wall Street is rough and only sometimes worth the trip. Selling private company shares on a public stock market—called an Initial Public Offering (IPO)—requires significant planning and financing. Filing registration documents with U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and preparing an investment prospectus can take up to four months. Legal and accounting fees accrued during the preparation process can easily surpass $1 million depending on the company’s size, according to Poyner & Spruill LLP, a North Carolina-based law firm specializing in IPOs.

Kai Smith believes in the value of business etiquette. As an ex-convict who now earns six figures as the President/CEO of his own consulting company, Smith credits the etiquette classes he paid for after his prison release for his turnaround.

“Those classes made a tremendous impact on my life,” Smith says. “They taught me how to not only respect myself more and interact with people in a manner which was ultimately effective — they also taught me my true self worth.”

Smith, who is African-American, is just one of a growing number of minorities interested in etiquette. According to Amazon.com, multicultural etiquette books such as Karen Grigsby Bates and Karen Elyse Hudson’s Basic Black: Home Training for Modern Times Norine Dresser’s Multicultural Manners: Essential Etiquette for the 21st Century and Fonzworth Bentley’s Advance Your Swagger: How to Use Manners, Confidence, and Style to Get Ahead all have a higher sales ranking than mainstream etiquette book Emily Post’s Etiquette in Society, in Business, In Politics, and At Home.
